Tech Tips – Refresh and Maintain your Current Tech (Part 5)

Most people will be familiar with the frustration of running out of storage space, whether it’s on a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop PC.

What you can actually do to solve the problem also varies between devices.

Desktop and Laptop PC Storage

It’s usually fairly simple to add storage to a standard desktop or laptop, the exception being that if you want to add an internal drive, then you of course need to have the appropriate knowledge (or know someone who can do it for you, like us!) For many users, an external drive or even a few flash drives can help to free up space on their machine that they may need to install other software or download a large file (or group of files) to work on.

External and flash drives usually connect through USB, although there are NAS (Network Attached Storage) solutions that might be worth looking into if you have a very large volume of data, or have many people who need to access that data.

People often use flash drives to transport documents such as presentations, or PDF files between offices or just as a short-term backup. External drives are sometimes used in similar ways, but are much larger capacity.

There are also some external SSDs available now, which connect via USB-C and have exceptionally fast transfer speeds, for those who need to store or transport very large amounts of data.

Security Concerns

It should be noted that, on the whole, external drives and flash drives are intended for personal use. If your storage issue is work-related, you should contact your IT department first, as there will be strict security guidelines that should be followed regarding the storage and transmission of sensitive data.

There are some storage options such as encrypted flash and external drives that may be allowed in these kinds of situations, but as always, check first.

If you’re unsure what kind of storage would be suitable for you, feel free to pick our brains, that’s what we’re here for! We can advise you on your options based on your usage scenario.

Next week we’ll look into mobile and tablet storage and see what you can do about storage issues there too!
