Why Choose VoIP?

Posted on July 24th, 2013 by Emily

In the second instalment of the Geek Guru Blog this week, we’ll be looking at VoIP in a little more depth.

The main advantages to having a VoIP system installed are twofold. Because they’re computer-based, they’re often highly configurable and can be adjusted to suit most preferences. They also often offer much better value for money than standard telephone lines, particularly for international communications.

Many communications with customers and between businesses are conducted digitally now. We email documents rather than posting them, create and share important events using a calendar app, and even view someone’s holiday snaps using Dropbox or Facebook.  The logical advancement of this is that we start to use these available data connections to transmit voice communications too. According to a UN agency, by the end of 2014, there will be more mobile phones in the world than people, so it makes sense that attitudes towards technology like this are changing, and more individuals as well as businesses are switching away from regular telephone lines in favour of their digital counterparts.

Having a VoIP Gateway like the ones we offer in our 3CX packages means that your business can make and receive calls through a regular phone line simultaneously, as the calls are converted into VoIP or SIP by the gateway system. This means it’s far easier and cheaper to expand than a normal telephone network, so it can grow with your business, and the beauty of it is that as it is computer-controlled, it can be monitored, supported and upgraded along with the rest of your IT equipment.

On the installation of these full-featured VoIP systems we often suggest that our clients take up a package with a business-class Internet Telephony Service Provider (or ITSP). Geek Guru can put you in contact with one of our partners for this, so there’s no need to worry about sorting this out yourself, we aim to make the transition as smooth as possible!

If you choose to take a different option such as Skype for Business, you will need to make sure that your business’ ISP allows for VoIP usage, and if it has a usage cap. If there is a cap, you may need to upgrade or change providers, but this is also something we can advise you on and help you with, if it’s necessary. You normally use a standard computer headset with your normal PC (or your smartphone handset/headset) for software-based VoIP like Skype, so the hardware costs will be minimal, as long as you have a computer (or smartphone) to run the software. Skype’s subscription models can free you from the need for a landline while still having a business number people can call, and save you money, especially on international calls.

Next time we’ll discuss the suitability of VoIP for various types of businesses, its upgradability, and how it can save you money.
