PC Security – Microsoft Security Essentials.

As an IT support company, we recommend that businesses protect workstations and data through the use of an anti-viral application suite such as Kaspersky or AVG. These have centralised control, meaning we can monitor and maintain the protection for the entire network from one centralised location. But what about home PCs or very small businesses where centralised monitoring is unnecessary?

Many people still don’t have antivirus, spyware or malware protection because they think they’ll have to shell out a lot of money to buy a protection suite, think it will take too long to download, or simply are unaware of the threats that lurk out on the internet and think they can do without it. If you don’t have any security software, you could be putting your computer and your personal data at serious risk. The solution, however, may not be as expensive or time consuming as you think.

In the first of a series of articles about free ways to protect your home PCs and laptops, we will explore Microsoft’s home grown software, Microsoft Security Essentials.

Provided for free on Microsoft’s website, this software is available to users of genuine Windows Vista and Windows 7 products, and is for individual users or small businesses with 10 PCs or less. It provides malware, spyware and virus protection, and ties in nicely with other Microsoft security products like the Malicious Software Removal Tool and Windows Firewall.

It may not provide as much of a toolbox as paid “premium” security software, but it is fairly lightweight, meaning it will still run on older and slower machines, and will keep itself up to date along with the rest of the Windows components. It provides fast, efficient protection for your computer against malware, spyware and viruses.

Because it’s developed by Microsoft, as long as you download the software from a reputable source such as CNet’s or Microsoft’s own website you can be sure that this software won’t install any malware or spyware itself, which is often a worry when downloading “free” tools from the internet.

The initial download is less than 10mb in size, and so takes only a minute or two to download on a broadband connection. Installation is quick and easy, it completes in less than 5 minutes on a typical home PC.

Overall, if you are lacking antivirus software and want something quick, easy and lightweight to help protect your machine from the ‘evils’ of the internet, Microsoft Security Essentials is a very good place to start.
